Secure Sockets Layer, or SSL, is a protocol used to encrypt the data exchanged between a hosting server and its users. The practical application of employing an SSL is to preserve the information that customers submit on your site - a login page, a payment page if you run a web-based store, etc. Any information they type in in any box on the website shall be submitted securely to the server, so their login or payment details will be protected from being accessed by unauthorized people. Normally, an SSL certificate needs a dedicated IP address to be installed, meaning that the overall cost for your presence online shall be bigger. While this might not exactly be a problem for a larger business, it may matter for a non-profit organization or a small online shop which doesn't generate big revenue if additional money should be spent. That is the main reason why we have taken advantage of an extension referred to as Server Name Indication (SNI) and we've made it possible to use a shared server IP address to set up an SSL certificate.

Shared SSL IP in Cloud Hosting

A shared IP can be employed for any SSL certificate, regardless if you get it from us or from a different retailer and regardless of the cloud hosting service which you have on our end. If you get the SSL from us, you'll come across this option on the certificate order page in your hosting Control Panel where you could also make use of the 1-click automatic configuration option which we offer. If the latter is selected in the SSL order wizard, our system shall install and set up everything for you via the specially configured server shared IP, so once you obtain and approve the SSL, there shall not be anything else to do on your end. You could save the funds you will otherwise need to pay for a dedicated IP and the SSL will do the job in the same exact way, so any data that the website visitors submit will be encrypted. The sole difference is that if you input the shared IP instead of your domain within a browser, the website will not show up.

Shared SSL IP in Semi-dedicated Servers

Any SSL certificate could be used with our specially configured shared IPs, so if you have a semi-dedicated server account, you can use this option with just a couple of mouse clicks when you install a certificate which you acquire through us or through another vendor. For the SSLs which we offer you can also take advantage of another function and have our system set everything up for you. Thus the instant you approve the SSL, the shared IP address will be set for the particular domain or subdomain and the certificate will be installed without any action required on your end, so any info that site visitors submit on your site shall be secure. The SSL will function in the same exact way irrespective if it's set on a shared or a dedicated IP address and the one thing which is different between the two setups is that inputting the shared IP address as a URL within an Internet browser won't open your Internet site.
