The definition of “hosting” does not describe a particular service, but a variety of services which offer various functions to a domain. Having a website and e-mails, for instance, are two independent services even though in the general case they come together, so most of the people think of them as one single service. The truth is, each domain has a number of DNS records called A and MX, which show the server that handles each specific service - the first one is a numeric IP address, that identifies where the website for the domain name is loaded from, while the latter is an alphanumeric string, which shows the server that handles the e-mails for the domain name. For instance, an A record is 123.123.123.123 and an MX record would be mx1.domain.com. Whenever you open a site or send an email, the global DNS servers are contacted to check the name servers that a domain name has and the traffic/message is first directed to that company. In case you have custom records on their end, the Internet browser request or the email will then be sent to the correct server. The concept behind employing separate records is that the two services work with different web protocols and you could have your website hosted by one company and the e-mails by another.

Custom MX and A Records in Cloud Hosting

If you have a cloud hosting from our company, you will be able to view, create and modify any A or MX record for your domains. Assuming that a given Internet domain has our Name Servers, you'll be able to modify certain records through our Hepsia hosting CP and have your website or e-mails directed to another service provider if you wish to use only one of our services. Our sophisticated tool will enable you to have a domain hosted here and a subdomain below it to be hosted elsewhere by changing only its A record - this will not affect the main domain the slightest bit. If you decide to use the email services of another provider and they want you to create more than 2 MX records, you can easily do it with just a few clicks in the DNS Records section of your CP. You may also set different latency for every MX record i.e. which one will have priority.

Custom MX and A Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

If you purchase a semi-dedicated server plan from us, you will be able to see and edit the A and MX records for any one of the domain addresses or subdomains which you host within the account. The Hepsia CP, which you'll get to handle the account, offers an innovative, albeit easy-to-use tool in which all hosts are going to be listed in alphabetical order and you will be able to edit their records with no more than several clicks. If you have to set up a new record, it'll be equally easy - pick the domain/subdomain, type in the IP address or mail server record and you'll be all set. Additionally, you will be able to set different priority for the MX records that you create in case you want to use a third-party e-mail provider and they ask you to create additional records other than the two default ones. If you ever encounter any troubles, we've got a in-depth Help section with videos in which you can see first-hand how to setup or edit any record.
